What I Wore on a 7 Day Caribbean Cruise Cruise Outfits with Photos & Links

caribbean cruise clothing

I wore this tank style loose beach dress on our shore excursion in beautiful St. Kitts. However, I also wear it on cruises as a bathing suit cover up when I head to the pool on sea days. Whether you are on the cruise ship or are out in port, you are going to need some casual day time outfits.

Sandals

I hope this post and the photos gave you some ideas of what to wear and how to pack for your upcoming cruise. My suitcase was a jumbled mess of clothing, jewelry, shoes, and toiletries before begrudgingly giving travel organizers a try. If your ship does not include free laundry, doing laundry can be pricey. To save space, consider packing clothing that can easily be hand-washed in your room’s shower or bathtub instead.

Keep in mind that some cruise wear, like swimwear, will take longer to hang dry than others. Bring at least three to four swimsuits to wash and rotate through your cruise, so you’ll never have to wear one that’s still wet. I didn’t understand why so many cruise enthusiasts selected itineraries specifically for precious sea days before setting sail on my first Caribbean cruise.

What to Wear in Ports of Call/Excursions

That means you can be more casual in the buffet and regular specialty restaurants. You could have scorching hot temperatures during the day, but it's chilly at night on board as your ship is cruising between islands. You'll likely want to bring a lightweight sweater or cardigan for the evening time and the onboard air conditioning. Planning ahead for your cruise vacation will help you pack for every moment. Most onshore excursions require reservations, so discuss with your family or travel buddies what kind of activities you cannot miss on your trip ahead of time. If you have whale-watching on your agenda, pack a jacket in case it's cold or misty, a hat so you don't get sunburnt, and binoculars.

Caribbean Cruise Outfit Ideas for Excursions

What to wear on your Caribbean shore excursions will depend on what activities and adventures you have planned. Consider packing a lightweight waterproof jacket for your days off the ship. Its fun to dress a little fancy and experience a nice dinner.

Swimsuit Cover up Dress

I’ll also share some photos of the clothing my husband wore on our cruise. For women, this means a dress most night for dinner and a gown for formal night. Most Caribbean cruises are quite warm during the day and at night. However, if you’re traveling in the colder months of the year between December and March, it can become chilly at night. It’s a good idea to bring along a light jacket or sweater just in case you get cold. Other than that, expect temperatures in the high 70s (Fahrenheit) and sunny days all year round.

Shoes I Wore on my Cruise

So now you know what to pack non clothing wise for a Caribbean cruise we will turn our attention to clothes to pack for a Caribbean cruise. It is important to be sun safe wherever in the world you are cruising but this is especially true for the Caribbean no matter what time of year you are visiting. For more information on the best toiletries to bring on a cruise check out this post. And I have never met anyone who has either and we have sailed through some really rough seas. The Caribbean Seas are not renowned for being very rough but you can encounter rough seas anywhere especially if there is a hurricane nearby. Your cruise cabin key is perhaps the most important thing on a cruise.

To Bring On Your Cruise

The key to packing for a Caribbean cruise is choosing pieces that can be worn between occasions. The below collages show how you can do this with some staple pieces. In addition, this guide will break down what the dress code is for these different occasions and what not to wear. If you’re going on an excursion, check to see if they have any requirements for clothing. For instance, many excursions that involve motor vehicles like 4-wheelers or dune buggies require participants to wear closed-toe shoes.

Casual Wear

When deciding what to pack, making sure you’re comfy and sun-safe is the biggest priority. Solid-colored board shorts paired with a button-up shirt (nautical print encouraged) work just as well for a day on deck. Then, change from swim trunks and flip-flops to chinos and dress shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant.

Linen pants are great to pack for warmer months because it's very breathable. Women can look to wear casual dresses, light-wash jeans, and rompers with blue hues to add a pop of color, this is especially perfect for the Greek Islands! These are great outfits that can also be worn during the day while you explore incredible ports like Rome, Paris and Athens. Therefore, you can plan to pack casual wear for warmer weather. In my experience, generally Europeans dress a bit nicer and follow the dress codes more strictly. Even on casual evenings, most guests look very polished and fashionable.

Don’t get caught out and take a charger with you and a spare cable. And while you can rent snorkel equipment in the Caribbean you are not guaranteed of the quality. Therefore we will at least travel with a snorkel mask if not a full set with flippers.

A long-sleeve collared shirt with a tie, paired with nice dress pants, can also work well on Formal Night. Similar to other European outfit ideas, I would encourage you to stick to more neutral colors and save the bright colors and bold patterns for your Caribbean sailing. Of course, these are just ideas for what you could consider wearing on formal night. Packing for your sailing’s more formal evening depends on how long your sailing is.

Fun details like exotic beading or embroidery will make you look more relaxed and vacation ready. Bright, happy prints in tropical colors to simple neutrals help set the mood. They look good, keep you cool, and are an excellent way for your legs to get a bit of sun.

If you are packing for a European cruise with Royal Caribbean, you’ll want to ensure you’ve packed outfits for evenings onboard the ship. Picture sailing away into the sunset from Italy, Spain or Greece after you’ve had an incredible day exploring in the sun. Remember to pack 2-3 bathing suits, to have a rotation if one is wet. Packing 1-2 swimsuit cover ups for sea days and beach days will come in handy. We cruised on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam and brought outfits for the day, as well as 5 casual and 2 dressy evenings.

That said, if you don’t want to dress up, it’s best to dine somewhere other than the upscale restaurants or the main dining room during formal night. These spots are for formal dining, and you’ll be out of place if you show up wearing sneakers and a t-shirt. Remember that you can pack lighter by wearing outfits more than once on a cruise. A good tip is to pair a daytime outfit with dressier shoes and some jewelry, and wear it in the evening for a whole new look. Although you don’t see it in the photos, I did bring a light sweater with me as well as a shawl.

FAQs about what to wear on a Caribbean Cruise

Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem. So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits. I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same. In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise. If you are traveling during this time you may get rainy days and stronger winds. Therefore we recommend adding a light jacket that has some waterproofing.

The Caribbean, though still warm, enters hurricane season, often seeing turbulent weather, including high winds and heavy rain. Trying to figure out what to wear on a Caribbean cruise in the winter is much easier than in other seasons. Pack your trunk for a glamorous whirl around the Caribbean’s blue skies and clear seas. Visiting from December to May, you’ll be greeted with warm weather and mostly dry skies. Embarkation day can be a real waiting game, between waking up early to wait to enter the cruise terminal, check-in, passport checks, and security. Once you’re through all that, there’s of course, the obligatory muster drill and waiting period until your cabin is actually available.

Overview of Dress Codes

Do you have to dress up if you aren’t going to dinner in the dining room? A trip to the buffet, however, is much more casual and there are a number of other restaurants on a ship that range from casual to fancy. In other words, you need to dress for the weather in the home port. This short sleeve plus size dress is gorgeous and very flattering.

How many outfits should I pack for a Caribbean cruise?

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way. After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup. One of the things I love about Caribbean cruises is that it is a warm weather cruise.

Personally I love wearing a maxi dress for ports and on the ship in the Caribbean. I like to wear them as a beach cover but they can also be used in the main dining room (MDR) on smart casual evenings. While I used to go all-out and pack ballgowns and high-heels, I’ve gravitated more towards versatile dresses that can easily be dressed up or down. Perhaps I will curl my hair and wear a little extra makeup on formal night these days. For my husband, he prefers to wear his sports coat or casual blazer rather than a tuxedo or suit.

For long cruises over 10 days in length, packing enough daytime Caribbean cruise outfits while working with limited cabin space is a delicate art. For dinner, shorts, jeans, and flip-flops were strictly off-limits in all restaurants except for the auxiliary buffet restaurant. Men needed to be in a collared shirt and slacks, while women could wear a nice blouse with trousers or a skirt, or a dress. The dinner dress code was strictly enforced, while the daytime dress code tended to be lenient.

One of my favorite things about cruises in the Caribbean is using the pools and hot tubs on day one. If you want to do this then you will need to have swimwear in your carry on bag. We always recommend packing lip balm that has an SPF so your lips are protected when on beach excursions etc. As well as the lanyard for your card we also recommend having a waterproof phone case. If you plan on heading in the sea it is important to keep your valuables such as your phone and wallet on you at all times so they do not get stolen or lost. What started as a yearly vacation with family quickly turned into a passion for travel, cruising and adventure.

We decided to go to Caneletto, an Italian specialty restaurant for the second formal night. We still dressed “nicely”, but skipped the longer evening dress I brought and the suit for my husband. I wore this long black sundress in the evening on our cruise.
